Born in Medan on December 22, 1974, Arafat began writing poetry, short stories, and then novel. His Novel Lampuki was selected as one of the winners in the novel-writing competition organised in 2010 by the Jakarta Arts Council (DKJ). Since 2005 he has published seven novels. He has also won several writing contests both on national and local level. His short stories and poetry have appeared in numerous anthologies.
